This book is about people

An inspiring and acutely relevant story about the first private refugee shelter in the Netherlands and its groundbreaking approach.

‘Angelo Schuurmans and the unconventional approach of his foundation create a shelter where people, not rules, take center stage. Schuurmans volunteered in a refugee camp on the Greek island of Leros, motivating him to do more for refugees.’

“This book originates from a personal quest for connection and a realistic, human perspective on integration and shelter. It's not about who is right, but about finding each other, time and again."

Available February 2026.

my approach

My approach focuses on establishing a shelter based on humanity and equality, with a residents' council at the helm, and without unnecessary relocations or sanction policies. Shelters for one or multiple key groups living under one roof, with the support and backing from the city and surrounding community.

I develop activity programmes that are supported by residents and partners, and negotiate with the COA to create strategies that align with local needs and policy goals. I specialise in safe living environments, with expertise in sheltering LGBTQ+ individuals with a migrant background.

Everything I do is based on clear principles: ownership of living environment, connection with society, and shared responsibility.

my story

I left for the Greek island of Leros as a volunteer in late 2015, planning to stay a month to assist with the refugee crisis. The unbelievable situation I encountered there and the hopeful people I met changed my life, prompting me to chart a new course upon my return home.

I began a charity – Home in Oss – that first began organising activities for newcomers. Under my leadership, it has grown into a professional foundation with 31 employees and more than 200 active volunteers. The municipality of Oss recently signed a groundbreaking contract with us to run its own shelter––a first in the Netherlands.
